Gono
Bishwabidyalay–a university with a difference–has been established
to create a new consciousness and commitment in the field of education,
particularly to foster social development and human welfare.
Gono Bishwabidyalay (GB) was established by Gonoshasthaya Kendra
(GK) Public Charitable Trust. It may be recalled that Gonoshasthaya
Kendra (People’s Health Centre), well-known nationally and internationally
is one of the pioneering NGOs in Bangladesh. The GK’s role since
1972 in the development of women and in reducing gender inequality
has had far-reaching effect. Moreover, by bringing into effect
a system of health insurance, protection of women’s right, preservation
of folk culture and art objects, and by playing a leading role
in the formulation of Bangladesh National Drug Policy, the GK
has benefited the country in many ways. No wonder these services
have been recognized by all concerned. The Gonoshasthaya Kendra
was honoured with the highest national award of Bangladesh – The
Independence Day Award in 1978. GK was also awarded the prestigious
Magsaysay Award (considered as Asian Nobel Prize) from Philippines
in 1985 and in 1992, the Swedish Parliament offered the Right
Livelihood Award (known as an Alternative Nobel Prize) to GK.
With the same dedicated spirit of sacrifice the Gono Bishwabidyalay
has been taking shape since July 14, 1998 as a university with
a difference.
Gono Bishwabidyalay (GB) offers special subjects for studying
the life and society of developing nations, particularly certain
aspects of tradition, culture and creativity of the people of
Bangladesh, the liberation war of Bangladesh, gender inequality
and environment. The conventional degree oriented courses, incorporating
most advanced knowledge and technology, are also offered here.
The GB is especially keen to bring female members of the society
into the fold of higher education by providing them with proper
facilities. The authority is equally interested in helping students
coming from families with low income, children of martyrs and
ethnic minorities.
Location
The campus of Gono Bishwabidyalay is only 40 minutes
drive from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh and about 25 minutes
from Dhaka Zia International Airport. Far from the madding crowd
of city life, it is in the GK Campus where one can find nature
in its pristine form. The campus is spread over an area of about
150 acres of land. We are using a four-storied GK building of
about 68,000 sq. ft for our purpose. GK provides two hospital
facilities – one at GB Campus, Nayarhat (Savar) and the other
in Dhaka city. Construction of third hospital at Sripur is nearing
completion. GK had also established a modern Microbiology Research
Laboratory at the campus with the help of Physicians for Social
Responsibility of Finland and National Public Institute of Helsinki
University, which is also used by GB for research and experiment
purposes.
Some
salient features of Gono Bishwabidyalay at a glance:
Gono Bishwabidyalay is a university with a difference. Though
Gono Bishwabidyalay is a non-government institution, many
features of public universities are followed by the university.
Most of the teachers are full-time and working only for
Gono Bishwabidyalay. All the teachers are non-smokers.
All teachers receive better salaries and allowances than
public universities. Hardworking and enterprising teachers
are specially honoured. Besides classroom teaching, practical
classes, tutorials, field visits, group discussions, debate,
seminar, introduction with poor families, planting trees,
preserving the environment are included in the education
system at Gono Bishwabidyalay.
Both students and teachers are accountable. There is a 25
per cent discount on tuition fees in cases of 90 per cent
attendance in classes. An atmosphere of amity exists here
among the new and old students.
Not only science and technology-related courses but also
subjects related to Arts and Social science are taught here.
Associating Ayurveda with Physiotherapy has been made effective
here.
Students who have passed SSC can get themselves admitted
to different diploma and certificate courses here.
Bengali, English, Environmental Science, War of Liberation,
Gender studies, Ethics and Equity courses are compulsory.
Students also have to work and conduct research in the villages
as part of their study programmes.
There are facilities to learn Computer operation at a nominal
expenditure.
There is no individual owner of Gono Bishwabidyalay. The
university has been established with the help of Gonoshasthaya
Kendra Charitable Trust. Gono Bishwabidyalay is run by a
different Trustee Board and Syndicate.

A
New Pedagogy and a New Methodology:
Classical Pedagogy, such as classroom teaching and laboratory
work, should certainly have its place in teaching system,
but more stress is put on the participatory methodology
for groups in Gono Bishwabidyalay. It is imperative for
the students, teachers, and persons involved in the University
administration to consider the poor local villagers as friends
and work with them as their associates and, if possible,
share their experience of struggle for existence. Students
are expected to play, individually or collectively, the
role of health workers, of teachers for literacy campaign
whenever such services are needed. Students and teachers
are voluntarily involved in natural disaster management
activities.
Objectives:
To bring cohesion between scientific ideas and people's
aspiration as well as between the knowledge and thought
pattern of men and women.
To
foster consciousness about scientific queries and welfare
of mankind.
To
enhance awareness of environment and surroundings, their
preservation and their uses for humanity at large.
To
build a bridge of understanding between modern scientific
knowledge and the field experience gained by the people
in respect of their socio-economic conditions.
To
express active sympathy for the backward sections of the
people and to participate actively in eradication of poverty
and overall backwardness.
To
work toward sustaining and modernizing indigenous arts and
crafts which are now declining because of negligence.
To
find out workable solutions for the problems of the people
by applying local experience.
To
learn lessons from the struggles of the people as well as
the history of the wars of liberation of countries including
Bangladesh.
To
create awareness of situations of the country and of the
people in particular, of life in villages, and take steps
for their improvement.

Library
The University library remains open from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. It is
equipped with a large number of books in various subjects including
journals. Fresh acquisitions are continually enriching the collection.
Accommodation and Cafeteria
Foreign students will be provided with modest accommodation at
Gonoshasthaya Kendra Dormitory and in the newly built hostel during
the period of their study. They will live and take
food with Bangladeshis. The University has a Cafeteria in its
building where the students, if they wish, can have their lunch
and tea at their own cost.
Games and Sports
There are arrangements for indoor and outdoor games and sports
for students. Special care is taken to teach students physical
exercises for helping them live a healthy life.
System of Evaluation
Gono Bishwabidyalay discourages individualistic competition in
the evaluation system. Evaluation is made on the holistic personality
of a student. Of course, the performance of the individual student
in his/her subject in the class will also be taken into account.
A system of evaluation would be developed to measure the willingness
and interest of a student in the services to common people and
society or in any other special field in which he/she might show
interest and which would be useful to his/her country.
Every year each student shall plant at least one sapling and shall
take care of it. This is also included in the process of the general
evaluation of a student.
Medical Facility
Students can get medical service at the Gonoshasthaya Kendra hospital
at a comparatively low cost.
Students’ Club/Society
Students can form their own Club/Society for organizing appropriate
social and cultural activities. But in no way, any student group
will work as a sister-organization of any political party, nor
will it undertake any activity in support of any political party.
Teacher Advisors will help students in running the common room,
publishing journals and magazines, organizing debates, literary
and discussion meetings, staging plays,
in sports and development activities in rural areas, in spreading
education, establishing libraries in villages, social development
and participation in national and international commemorative
days. Hopefully these clubs/societies will help, in addition to
what the University will provide in that direction, create and
maintain a friendly atmosphere conducive to education, culture
and development.
Religious Belief
Religious belief is entirely personal and private. No student
or teacher will be allowed to use religion in any manner – in
matters of politics or in spreading communal feelings. No one
will be allowed to preach any religious and political belief during
his/her stay in the University.
Smoking and Drug Addiction
Smoking and drug addiction are totally prohibited at Gono Bishwabidyalay.
Nobody should apply for either admission or for a job here if
he/she is a smoker or a drug addict. If any student suppresses
the fact contrary to this provision, his/her admission will be
cancelled and development and other fees will be forfeited. Students
are advised not to use cosmetics, which is harmful to their health.
Career Planning
At Gono Bishwabidyalay, each and every curriculum has been planned
in such a way as to help students acquire theoretical knowledge
and practical training simultaneously. The objective is to enable
them to get a job after the completion of their studies either
in a public or in any private organization. The University would
also encourage students so that at least some of them are self-employed.
The University would counsel the students to consider specialized
studies at home or abroad.
Discipline
In dealing with all cases of activities against the principles
of the University or activities subversive of discipline, the
decision of the University authorities shall be final.
