In 1974 GONO PATHSHALA (The People's School) was established to provide education for children and women. Its target group was poor boys and girls who were unable to go to school. At first, teachers went to the villages to talk with mothers and fathers about the importance of educating their children. Eventually, an elementary school was established on the GK Savar campus. Later, other elementary schools were established in locations around the country. Gono Patshala also offers education for women. In 1972, only 3% of women in Bangladesh could read a newspaper. | scholarship to learn basic reading and mathematics. On the completion of the preliminary course, women Gono Patshala students must pass a test in reading a newspaper and solving simple math problems. If successful they, are guaranteed employment at GK, where they continue studying two hours a day, six days a week. |
In 1998 Gono Bishwabidyalay (The People's University) was founded, and was sited on the GK Savar campus. Enrollment by 2000 was 400 students. The purpose of Gono Bishwabidyala is:
The Institute of Health Sciences will offer a certificate course to paramedics in pharmacy, physiotherapy and radiology. Located at the GK training complex in Sreepur, the Institute will offer paramedics a way to improve their skills and receive official recognition for their advanced knowledge.
